Laser printers are expensive investments that will last for years if maintained properly. When it comes to replacing toner cartridges for them, there are a few options. These include: having the existing cartridge refilled, buying a remanufactured cartridge, or purchasing a genuine cartridge from the manufacturer of the printer. While the first two options may be cheaper, they may not necessarily save you money in the long run.
The biggest disadvantage of remanufactured cartridges is quality control while they are being made. They are very easy to re-make and can even be done in the garage of a home. If you buy one online, you have no way of knowing what you are getting.
There are other downsides to using remanufactured products. Often the quality of printing is substandard. Also, in the case of black cartridges especially, the life of the toner is reduced by about 33 percent. This information was established in an independent study done by a leading manufacturer of laser printers.
Another study revealed that many businesses who used remanufactured monochrome cartridges reported that the toner leaked into the printer. This not only caused damage to the printer, but it resulted in down-time which cost the companies many hours of productivity. The same businesses also reported that as much as 50 percent of print-outs could not be used because of inferior quality.
None of this is likely to happen if you use an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) cartridge. While it’s true that there may be some faulty new cartridges, the failure rate mentioned above is rare. Even if there is a problem with a new one, you can rest assured that it will have the manufacturer’s warranty and/or guarantee.
In addition, in the unlikely event of the contents of the cartridge damaging the printer, this too will be covered by the manufacturer. In the case of printer damage caused by a remanufactured, compatible, or even a counterfeit cartridge, there is no such cover. Companies that are trying to save money by using these products may end up paying for expensive printer repairs.
If you use a genuine cartridge made specifically for the model of your laser printer, you can expect continual high quality and precision that the printer is capable of producing. OEM cartridges are more reliable, have longer lives, and cause little, or no, downtime. Furthermore, a genuine cartridge puts less strain on other components in the printer, e.g. rollers, drums, and fusers.
If you work with color, an OEM cartridge is calibrated to give the highest possible quality. When you buy a new cartridge, there is also a free recycling option. The manufacturer invites you to return the old cartridge which will be recycled in an effort to save the environment.
When you buy a laser printer, the handbook will contain operating instructions, advice on how to lengthen the life of the printer and how to clean it. This reading material will also include the manufacturer’s recommendation that you use genuine toner cartridges when needed. Remember that your printer’s warranty may be jeopardized if you use an unbranded cartridge.
I know of a site that is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Brother printer toner cartridges and toner cartridges made by other brands, with nearly 13 million worth of stock available for next day delivery.
