Choosing the right Presidential teleprompter is one of the secret ingredients that contribute to a beautiful mirage. The mirage is that our Presidents are especially clever and intelligent men. Eloquence is as natural to them as the air they breathe, and all their thoughts are refined. Now this mirage can be shared with the public.
The “PT” is a lectern with one or two glass panels, beneath which the script “flows” for his gaze while speaking. If two panels, they are set on each side of his lectern. Thereby they are visible to him whether looking at the audience to his left or right.
Needless to say, expertise isn’t needed for a President’s equipment because price is no object and it’s possible to buy one of each variety on the market. At the point that becomes expense, just raise taxes or print more money. Should anyone ask the price, there’s that one size fits all answer: That’s Classified. Sadly, very few of us have such a luxury, and will have to be more careful in our expenditures.
There is teleprompter software that gives the operator flexibility to import either markers or entire documents into a speech. This isn’t usually needed for a President, whose speeches are seldom interrupted excepted by booing or cheering. It is a notable feature, however, for we lesser mortals, whose presentations may assume more audience participation, or at certain points more detail.
One issue which will have to be fussed over some before any selection is the proper reading range, and its relationship to size. The basic rule of thumb is ten inches of screen for every four meters of distance. Using this standard, print size can easily be adjusted for distance. Most lecterns allow this flexibility to adjust the size of print, and of course there are varying screen sizes as well.
It will be quite to have the option of controlling the rate at which words flow across the screen. These controls are available either with a hand-held switch or a foot-controlled pedal. For a President’s purposes, foot-controlled is certainly better, since the hands must remain free to amplify important points with sweeping, grand gestures. It may or may not be appropriate for any other given speaker to add such drama to his presentation, but at least the possibility exists.
Speeches need to be given either indoors or outdoors, and in all kinds of light. Any driver knows how difficult it can be reading road signs at certain times of day. It is worth considering spending a little bit more to purchase a set with special glass which resists glare.
With all this equipment at hand, it is still up to the speaker to give the speech. Even some Presidents eventually found they preferred using cue-cards, and could never master the art of looking off to the screen’s left or right in order to make eye contact while speaking. When choosing the right Presidential teleprompter, try it and see if it’s the right tool for you.
